When Challenges Strike: How to Remember Who You Are and What You Know

Introduction: Remembering Your Strengths in the Face of Challenges

It’s surprisingly easy to forget my experience and knowledge when faced with serious challenges in my role as a coach or organizational development consultant. After years in business, I’m still amazed when these moments of doubt creep in. This blog explores how to reclaim your sense of self and confidence when challenges arise in your business.

As a business owner, you may encounter conflicts with clients or employees. In Blog 12, I shared strategies for navigating differences of opinion. Now, let’s focus on the most important aspect: remembering who you are and what you bring to the table during difficult times.

Learning to Accept Who I Am as a Business Owner

No matter what happens, I’ve realized I am still the person who has built a successful business and impacted many lives. In moments of doubt, it’s crucial to pause and recall the knowledge and accomplishments I bring to the table.

When I rush to solve a problem immediately, I often lose clarity, and my communication becomes less effective. The key for me has been to slow down, resist catastrophizing, and focus on staying present. Obsessing over worst-case scenarios takes me away from myself and makes me less effective. By slowing down, I can process my emotions and regain clarity, enabling me to act with confidence.

A Simple Exercise for Reclaiming Presence

Meditation has been a powerful tool for grounding myself in challenging times. Here’s a process I’ve developed to help me reconnect with my inner strength:

  1. Pause and Observe
When I feel disconnected, I sit quietly and take time to observe what’s happening within me. Am I numb, overwhelmed, or distracted? Acknowledging these feelings is the first step to moving forward.
  2. Breathe Intentionally
I take slow, intentional breaths—three counts in through my nose, then exhale gently through my mouth. I visualize my breath as a cleansing force, washing away any tension or emotional blocks.
  3. Stay with the Feelings
As I continue breathing, I allow myself to fully experience my emotions. This process helps me identify what I’m feeling and how it’s affecting me.
  4. Ask the Key Question
Once I feel more centered, I ask myself: “What is the next right thing to do?” This simple yet powerful question helps me refocus and move forward with clarity.

By the end of this practice, I feel more aligned with who I truly am—calm, capable, and confident.

Conclusion: Finding Clarity and Confidence

Taking the time to reconnect with myself through intentional practices like meditation allows me to approach challenges with a clear mind and a calm heart. By staying present, I can process my emotions, access my strengths, and make decisions that are truly beneficial to me and my business.

When you take the time to reflect and center yourself, you’ll find that the answers you seek are already within you. Challenges become opportunities to grow, and your confidence grows stronger with each step forward. Remember: you have everything you need to succeed—it’s just a matter of slowing down, being present, and trusting yourself.
